How a Modified Fast Can Improve Weight Loss

Intermittent fasting

There are several different types of modified fasts you can use to help improve your weight loss. Most modified fast diets are based on intermittent fasting, which involves eating only during certain hours of the day or certain days of the week. 

Most intermittent diets revolve around a period of self-denial, then a period of eating pretty much whatever you want. This can make it hard to maintain self-control, as you alternately starve then stuff yourself. While this can be effective in burning away weight short-term, using this method alone can be hard to keep up with, and once you stop, you’ll put the weight back on.

Protein-sparing modified fast

With a protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF), you cut out all carbohydrates and fats, cut calories to 800 or less per day, and eat at least .07 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily. It’s a ketogenic diet that many consider to be a form of forced starvation.

While this has proven effective for a sharp weight drop over a short period of time, PSMF can lead to nutritional deficiencies and requires careful refeeding at the end, which can be difficult for you to comply with.
